COMPOSITION
Carbotek Perfusion Solution is a clear, colorless, sterile solution. Each ml contains 84 mg (1 mEq/ml) of sodium bicarbonate.
INDICATIONS FOR USE
Carbotek Perfusion Solution is used in horses, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs and cats in the treatment of metabolic acidosis resulting from many reasons (renal diseases, uncontrolled diabetes, shock or severe dehydration, circulatory deficiencies caused by cardiac arrest, severe primary lactic acidosis).
It’s especially indicated for respiratory acidosis resulting from the retention of carbon dioxide, metabolic acidosis resulting from accumulation of acid metabolites due to metabolic disorders, renal acidosis related to inadequate excretion of hydrogen ions from the kidneys.
ADMINISTRATION ROUTES AND AMOUNTS
Unless advised otherwise by the veterinarian, Carbotek Perfusion Solution is administered intravenously (IV) and slowly. Concentration of the solution is determined depending on the condition and the requirements of the patient, and the concentrations can be used as undiluted (8.4%) or as isotonic (1.5%). The amount of sodium bicarbonate to be administered for a 4 - 8 hours period is adjusted according to the severity of acidosis, total CO2 level, blood pH and clinic condition of the animal, which is based on approximately 2 - 5 mEq/kg (or 2 - 5 ml/kg) body weight. If CO2 level is unknown, Carbotek Perfusion Solution can be administered inside of 5% dextrose, isotonic saline solution or another suitable solution, at an average dose of 2 ml/kg bw. Treatment should be continued with an isotonic (1.5%) dilution rate. Completion of the treatment depends on the clinical condition of the animal. If there is a reduction in severe symptoms, frequency and amount of the dose should be reduced.
